Introduction to Chicago Women's Park and Gardens / Park 550

Opened to the public after renovation in 2000, Chicago Women’s Park and Gardens at 1827 S. Indiana honors the contributions that women have made to the city throughout its history. The park provides a quite respite in the Near South Side community area.

It is located within the Prairie Avenue Historic District, and nestled between two house museums— the Widow
Clarke House and the Glessner House.  Located in the Near South Side Community,  Chicago Women’s Park & Gardens totals [2.51] acres and formerly housed the Vietnam Veterans Museum and the Clarke House Museum sits adjacent to the gardens. Built in 1836 for Henry B. Clarke, it is Chicago’s oldest house.Over the years, the house survived fires, belonged to a church, and was moved twice – during the second move, the house was stuck in the air for two weeks. The house is now located in the Chicago Women’s Park in the Prairie Avenue Historic District, and operated as a museum by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

In 2010, following years of community advocation to repurpose the neighboring indoor arts & cultural building next door at 1801 S. Indiana, the Chicago Park District completed the first phase of facility renovation by adding a ground floor indoor playground and two clubrooms, to compliment the existing café, and the existing Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Art Museum, which now operates out of the third floor of the building.

Working together to build a leading Chicago Community Center and Park facility.

The Chicago Women's Park and Gardens / Park 550 Advisory Council is a non-profit, all volunteer group who are actively and collectively working together to develop, foster, and sponsor educational programs and community activities that raise funds to enhance indoor cultural, art, & field house facility (at 1801 S Indiana Ave) and the adjacent Chicago Women's Park and Gardens (1827 S Indiana Avenue).

Working with the Chicago Park District (CPD), the Advisory Council represents the community's interest in developing, improving, expanding, and creating new Educational programs,  promoting preservation of Chicago's Women's Park and Gardens by ensuring maintenance and operation of the park is to Chicago's Landmark requirements, while working with other municiple, community, and Not-for-Profit stake holders to provide educational and cultural opportunities that serve the community at large.
